Shooting Schedule

This is a screen shot of the shooting schedule I produced in order to keep a track on when I needed to film which would help me to meet the deadline to hand in my rough cut.

I created it on word because I felt it was the easiest way to produce a graph displaying the date, time and location.

The props I needed for each shooting session were :

Camera and Tripod

Props and Locations List

After analyzing music videos and producing my animatic I have constructed a list of all the props I shall need in order to begin filming my video.

I have chosen to have a scene within the video filmed in a bedroom. I have chosen to use a bedroom in my own house as this will be really convenient for me. When looking at music videos from The Saturdays I have found that they have used props continuously throughout especially during 'I Just Cant Get Enough'!!!!

The images below show The Saturdays using props within their video. I believe that this gives the video a real 'feel good' feeling and it makes much more interesting to watch as a viewer!

As I would like my video to attract females I aim to use a lot of props associated with females.

Props

I shall aim to use:

A dressing table

Mirrors

Bags

Shoes

Make-up

Wardrobe

Ipod and docking station (opening title displayed)

Magazine covers

Diary

Jewellery Box

These are the props which I planned to use at the current moment. However, I am sure once I start filming more ideas will come into my head. All of these props will be available to me easily as they are objects that I own myself meaning that I will have to spend no money on the props I need to be equipped for filming.

I want to give the video a realistic feel therefore I aim to have many of the scenes set within my own home. This again is a huge benefit for me as it means I can film whenever I want. If I have the opportunity and chance I have planned to shoot some of my shots within the Studio. This will be more difficult as I will have to book the studio out at specific times therefore I shall see what I can arrange.

Within my home I would like to use the locations of:

A bedroom

The hallway

The landing and the stairs

The Kitchen

Using a variation and range of locations to carry out my filming in will enable my video to have more variation and in my opinion, make it more interesting! I believe that when videos are set within the same location all the way throughout it starts to become boring after a while. Also the different rooms within the house will make my video seem more realistic!!

Animatic

When planning the shots to include within my music video I produced an animatic. I drew the images and uploaded them into I Movie.

This is a screen grab taken from I Movie showing my images inserted in order, with the green bar being the music.

Once I had arranged the images in order I then inserted the song I was going to use. The next thing I had to do was to insert the timings onto each clip. The timings would show how long the specific shot will last.

I used the box above in order to insert the timings for each image into the duration box.

Having the song playing in the background will help me to know when each shot appears during the video when I begin to peice it together on Final Cut.

I used I Movie to produce my animatic as it is quick and easy to upload the images and insert the timings. With it taking little time to produce the animatic, it meant I had more time to start concetrating on filming and editing.

Shot list

When producing my Animatic I had to start thinking of the shots I would be using throughout my video.

I have made a list of some of the shots I aim to include within my video:

Close up shots of the character (head shots)

Close up shots of the characters lips to show lip syncing

Full body shots in order to show the characters outfits

Over the shoulder shots (mainly when looking through the dressing table mirror at the character)

Shots of just the characters hands , feet or eyes

I have selected some images taken from my Animatic in order to show some of the different shots I am to include.

This shot here shall be a close up shot of the characters feet. I would like the character to be wearing heels and walking past the camera or towards the camera. I would also like the shoes to change colour on each beat within the song.

This shot is going to be a full body shot of the character spinning round. I would like the camera to capture the full movement of the spin several times. I will place the camera directly in front of the character. I will capture this shot in the bedroom location.

This shot is going to be taken from the side. It will show the movement of the characters mouth when lip syncing the lyrics to the song. I felt that this would give the shots a bit of variation and just filming the lip syncing shots of the face from in front of the face would eventually start to look too repetitive and boring!!! To make this shot it will consist of me capturing four different images of four different types of shoes. I will then insert them into Final Cut and use a split screen to have each of the clips all showing at once. I like the idea of each of the squares within the shot changing what film it is showing every second to keep the audience interested and a bit more creativity to my editing. I will have to film the shoes in the same area with the same background. This shot will be taken from behind the character looking through the mirror. The camera will show half of the characters head and shoulder as though the camera is looking over her shoulder. However this drawing does not explain that very well!! The shot here will be a close up shot of the characters hands placing down a blusher and picking up some lipstick. The shot has the aim of showing the flow of action as the character applies her make-up. The close up shot will enable the audience to see exactly what the character is doing. The make-up will be placed upon the dressing table in the shot.

Camera shots and angles

In order for my music video to be full of different camera angles and shots I chose to explore more of the videos from 'The Saturdays' so I could aim to attract the same audience. I had a look at the video 'Higher' as I felt that I needed to look more into The Saturdays and how they use camera angles and props within their music videos to make them entertaining and successful.

Assessment 1 - Analysis of similar products

After searching the internet, looking at current songs and certain artists albums, I have chose a song by The Saturdays. The song is called ' Lose Control'. I believe it is a very attractive song, very upbeat and has a dance feel to it. I studied the lyrics and set out to plan what would occur in the video whilst each line or group of line was being spoken. I came up with some ideas of my own whilst listening to the song, however to help me be more successful I decided to look at other videos from The Saturdays to see what their genre is within their videos, who they seem to appeal to and I searched for other pop music videos to see what they included to attract their audience.

I decided to take a look at some previous videos from The Saturdays to make sure I knew how to attract the same genres audience. I took a look at their video 'I just cant get enough'! From the video I selected certain shots that I liked and intend to focus on using similar shots in order for the genre to fit with the song.

Initial Ideas

After doing some research into songs that I can use for my music video, I have came across a song from The Saturdays called ‘Lose Control’. My aim was to find an up beat song with a good beat to dance to and lyrics that are catchy in order to ‘sing along to’.

My aim is to produce a music video aimed more towards females than males. In order to start to piece together and visualize my music video, I am going to look over the lyrics of the song to see what scenes I could create in order to portray what the lyrics are saying.

First, I need to email The Saturdays Management in order to seek approval to use their song 'Lose Control' within my video.

Below is the text I shall include in the email:

To whom this may concern,

I am currently a student studying Media Studies at Hartlepool Sixth Form College. For my coursework in order to achieve my A level within media Studies I have been set the task of creating a music video. I have chosen a song by The Saturdays called 'Lose Control'. I was hoping that you would grant me the permission to use your song. This would very greatly appreciated. I have chosen this song because I enjoy listening to it, believe it has a fun vibe and I would be able to produce a successful music video in sync to it. In order to produce the video I will be carrying out all my own filming, using my own props and editing the video on final cut, a software we use within my college.

I hope to hear back from you soon,

Thankyou

Alex McMorris - Student at Hartlepool Sixth Form College

Here I have taken a screen shot of the email which I sent:

Digipak research - Girls Aloud

This is the front and back album cover of 'Out of control' by Girls Aloud. The front cover is very simple with a glamourous photo of the girls with a striking white background. The white background enables the photo to stand out. The girls are all wearing bright coloured outifts which anables the cover to work really well. It would successfully catch your eye when browsing through the charts in a store. The way the girls are possitioned is very interesting as they are not in line. Each of them are positioned on a different level giving the image alot more depth.

The back cover of the album uses the same colour scheme as the front cover. I think the font looks really good in all the different sizes. Thye have used the colours of the outfits the girls are wearing on the front when printing the track numbers on the back. Black and white with a slight dash of colour is a very smart way of producing an album cover and makes it look very 'stylish'.

The image displayed above is the inside of the album. The CD once again is very simple however the colours are much less bold than those used on the front and back. I like the simplicity of this CD artwork. People do not neccesserily look at the inside. When buying the CD you can not look at the inside within the shop as they are sealed therefore spending a lot of money and time on the inside would be rather pointless. It is the front and back that advertise and promote your album encouraging people to buy it by attracting their attention, therefore all the artists time and focus could be on constructing the front and back cover. This could be the reason why many CD's do not have a mass amount of artwork printed on them.

Digipak research - Katy Perry

This album cover is by Katy Perry and is called One of The Boys. The album cover does not fit with the title of the album however I believe Katy has done that for a reason. The title explaining she is one of the boys links with one of the songs she has wrote for the album however the front cover consists of her looking very girly, surrounded by girly objects. The album cover is very interesting because its full of color and catches your eye. Katy has made sure she is focused on the front cover for no doubt many reasons. This was Katy's first major album that went public therefore I believe she would want to be on the cover to make sure she was from then onwards going to recognized. The album has a very pop music feel to it because of all the props and colors and the use of the garden. It all seems too 'nicey nice' to be any other music genre.

This is the back cover of Katy Perry's Album 'One of the boys'. When first looking at it, you don't believe that it could be the other side of the previous image, the front cover. The front cover is made up of a picture set in a scene however this image is much more striking as it is just Katy on her own on plain white background. The use of colours and the outfit she is wearing are the complete opposite to the title 'one of the boys'. This makes the title and the images both really interesting and rather puzzling for her audience. The link you can indentify between the two images displayed on the front covers are that they both include the same colour scheme; the pink and the blue. The barcode here is situated at the top where on many album covers I have looked at, you find it most likely to be situated in the right bottom corner. The font is very 'funky' and stands out. This can be linked with the bright and bold personality of Katy Perry!

The image placed above the back cover of the album is the design placed on the CD. I like the design on this CD as it is very simple and displays the vital information needed; The artist and the title of the song. I believe that using the same colours throughout the digipak; The back, front and the CD design, enables people to recognize which artist each part of the album belongs to. I aim to take inspiration from this Album cover when producing my own CD Digipak as I believe for Katy it is a great success.

Analysing a Music Video

Black Eyed Peas Analysis

Commander by Kelly Rowland Analysis
We carried out this task right at the very start of our coursework project. I believe it helped me to understand the concept of a music video and inspired me with ideas to include within my own music video. The two videos I have analyzed; Commander and Pump it up, are very different. I chose two different videos to analyze because I wanted to see the difference within genres and also explore how a solo artist creates a music video to promote their song and in contrast, how a group create their music video to promote their song.

Lip Syncing Task

At the very start of our coursework project we were set the task of creating a short video which included lip syncing. The purpose of this task was to enable us to understand how important lip syncing is within a music video. The task made us realize how difficult it can be to link the movement of a characters mouth up to the lyrics in the song.

We captured the footage and then uploaded it onto Final Cut. Once we had done this we uploaded the song and started working on syncing the song with the movement of the lips.

It was the first time we used Final Cut as during the previous year we produced our work on I Movie. This therefore meant that this was a new experience for us and the task enabled us to learn the skills we needed and practice them before producing our on music video.
